Dead Zones Are a Design Problem — Not a Router Problem

The complaint is almost universal: excellent speed next to the router, nothing usable upstairs, in the study, or out on the terrace. The usual response is to buy a "better" box — a bigger consumer mesh kit, another extender, another promise of whole-home coverage.

Often the result is only marginally better, and sometimes worse. Interference increases, devices stick to distant nodes, and video calls still drop at the critical moment. The underlying issue is rarely the brand of the hardware. It is the absence of design.

High-performance residential Wi-Fi is engineered around the building, the materials, the density of devices and the way people actually work and live. Below is how that engineering mindset differs from simply adding more plastic.

1. Why consumer mesh still fails

Consumer mesh systems are genuine improvements over a single router in the wrong place. They still fail when nodes are placed by convenience rather than radio reality, when backhaul is wireless in a house full of foil insulation and concrete, and when every node is treated as equal in a building that is not.

Channel interference from neighbours, client devices that refuse to roam, and mesh hops that halve effective throughput are common. The product is not broken; it was never given a plan that matches the property.

2. Start with a site mindset

Before hardware is chosen, the property needs to be understood. Construction materials matter: concrete floors, metal roofing, low-E glass and foil-backed insulation are hostile to 5 GHz and 6 GHz signals. Device density matters: a household with two people working from home, multiple streams and a full smart-home stack is a different problem from a weekend cottage.

Critical zones matter most. The home office, the media room, outdoor entertaining areas and any space used for video calls deserve deliberate coverage, not leftover signal. A short walk-through with these factors in mind already outperforms a random mesh layout.

3. Wired backbone first

Where it is practical, Ethernet to access points transforms reliability. Wireless backhaul is a useful tool; it is not a religion. A single well-placed access point with a wired uplink often outperforms three wirelessly daisy-chained nodes.

In new builds and major renovations, planning cable runs for access points is one of the highest-leverage decisions a homeowner can make. In existing homes, creative use of existing cabling, MoCA or carefully chosen wireless backhaul still benefits from the same principle: minimise hops, maximise stability.

4. Access point placement principles

Height and clearance beat raw power. Ceiling or high-wall mounting, away from metal cabinets and large mirrors, gives cleaner coverage. Vertical coverage in multi-storey homes is as important as horizontal spread; a node on each level, correctly placed, usually beats a single powerful unit on the ground floor.

Overlapping coverage should be intentional so clients can roam without dropping, not so dense that co-channel interference becomes the new problem. Professional tools and experience make this balance measurable rather than guesswork.

5. Segmentation and prioritisation

Not all traffic is equal. Guest networks, IoT devices, trusted work machines and media streams have different security and performance needs. Separate SSIDs or VLANs keep a compromised sensor from reaching a work laptop, and quality-of-service rules can protect video calls from a 4K stream in another room.

For remote professionals, this is not a luxury. It is the difference between a network that supports deep work and one that constantly negotiates with the rest of the house.

6. Ongoing tuning

Houses change. New devices appear, outdoor living increases in summer, neighbours add their own access points. Firmware updates, channel management and occasional client steering keep a well-designed system performing as intended.

A light maintenance rhythm — quarterly checks or an included service arrangement — prevents the slow drift back into dead zones and congestion.

7. When to call a specialist

Multi-storey construction, thick walls, high device counts, dedicated media rooms, or simply the desire for a network that "just works" without constant tinkering are all signals that a designed approach will outperform another trip to the electronics store.
